Tobacco Road

Historic Tampa bar and gathering spot with live music, food, and decades of neighborhood history.

About

Tobacco Road is a two-story gathering place in Tampa with roots going back to the early 1900s. The building started as a bakery before becoming a speakeasy during Prohibition, complete with a hidden room behind a bookshelf on the second floor. Over the decades it operated under several names, including the Chicken Roost and Chanticlere Restaurant, before returning to the Tobacco Road name in the 1970s. The current owners, Michael Latterner and Patrick Gleber, took over in 1982 and have kept the structure largely as it was. The space serves food and drinks, hosts yearly events like crawfish boils and seafood festivals, and features live music throughout the week. It remains a fixture in the Tampa community with a physical presence that reflects its long history.
