Solar Rotary is a public art installation in the Communication & Information Sciences Building Courtyard at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Created in 1995, it uses the sun itself as the medium. At solar noon on summer solstice, a circle of sunlight illuminates the central seat, which contains a 4.5 billion year old meteorite from Dade County. Five bronze plaques throughout the plaza are each illuminated by circles of sunlight on specific historical dates and times during the year. The plaza features a circular central seat made with sand from all four corners of the university, four cardinal direction benches positioned about 65 feet out, and eight perimeter benches with nighttime lighting. Eight vertical posts form an eight-pointed star pattern overhead. Live oak trees and giant evergreen lirope plants frame the space.
