Hermitage Artist Retreat sits on a nine-acre campus in Englewood at the southern tip of Sarasota County, drawing accomplished artists across theater, music, visual art, literature, and other disciplines for multi-week residencies. The organization selects fellows through its Curatorial Council, composed of arts leaders from major cultural institutions. Work created here has been presented at venues including the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center, MoMA, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. The retreat offers free, hour-long community programs featuring new work and direct interaction with visiting artists, writers, and performers. The main building dates to 1907 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hermitage Artist Retreat was reconceived in 1999 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 2002. The organization also operates the Hermitage Englewood Art Center and hosts the Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens series.
